  The meaning of Baeron is a similar like the shape of a boat because of this place is surrounded by deep mountains and streams as if embraced by the mountains.

This place is called “ the Catacombs of Korea”Chonjimam is the birth place of Catholicism in Korea whereas Baeron is the place it grew up.Alexander Hwang, Sa Young started writing the Baekseo (Long letter) to be sent to the Pope in Rome and the bishop of Peking ,China just after Chinese priest Chu, Mun Mo was martyred.

Hwang baptized by Chinese priest James Chu, Mun Mo during the persecution 1801, and then Hwang came to Baeron and living in a cave near the pottery-klin.

French missionary who had been in charge in Korea thought that It was necessary to educate native young people for the priesthood. So they established a seminary in Baeron with the permission of the Holy See.

 

The house of Jang,Nak so (Jugi) was used as a classroom building. French priests in Baeron beside their teaching duties made great efforts in editing the first Korean-French dictionary initiated by French Bishop Daveluy.

In the meantime during the most severe persecution, Bishop Berneux and 5 other French priests and Jang, Nak So were all martyred.
