Fr. Ridel was able to reach to China by a boat with 11 Korean Catholics and he met a French admiral of a French fleet then had reported all details in Korea to him and Paris Foreign Missions in China that’s why they dispatched three warships to Korea to protest.French sent a fleet to Korea in September of 1866 to protest the Korean government about killing the nine French missionaries.
French ship came all the way to Yanghwajin port of Seoul through Han river.
The severe persecution was lasted for 6 years because of 4 times foreign power attempts to KoreaFirst moment was Russian invasion in the spring and the second was when the French warships left Han river to avoid winter freeze without contacting Korean Catholics. Third moment was when a German merchant landed at Deoksan in central area near Andrew Kim’s birth place to steal the relics of grave which was a tomb of the Lord Regent Taewongun.Final moment was due to invasion of an American fleet in 1871.
All these strange events caused the Lord Regent to hate and persecute the foreign powers and its people s especially innocent Catholics.
Because of his anger, many of unknown Catholics beheaded and their bodies thrown into the Hangang river without any trials.Name of Jeol-du-san derived from Jeol means Cut off, Du means Head and San means mount.
A great number of heads piles up similar like small mountain, so this place is called JEOLDUSAN.
